Lieut. Samuel Morehouse
(Between 1637-1687) |
Lieut. Samuel Morehouse
Another name for Samuel was Samuel Moorhous. Burial Notes: Gravesite found with stone nearly buried in the earth in June 1880 and reset by Mr. A. W. Morehouse. Noted events in his life were: • Military Service: as Lieutenant of the military company: Fairfield, Fairfield, CT. • Occupation: Land and highway surveyor: Fairfield, Fairfield, CT. Samuel was often one of a committee appointed by the town to act on the layout of lands and highways. • Land: in several grants: Redding, Fairfield, CT. The town granted several plots of land to Samuel, besides one of the "long lots" which were surveyed back from the village in half-mile widths for a distance of twelve miles, with a roadway between each lot, extending north to the highway, now running east and west from Redding Center across Redding Ridge to "Goodrich Hill". These lots were all unoccupied land and were surveyed by order of the town at the time when it was feared that the Crown would claim them. Samuel undoubtedly assisted in the survey, and one of the roads was called the Morehouse road. • Honors: First Marshall or Sheriff of Fairfield county, 1673, Fairfield, Fairfield, CT. • Will Filed, Dec 9, 1687. Proved 13 Mar 1688, Lt. Sherwood and John Seeley overseers. Sons John, Daniel, and James were under 20 years of age. Daughters Hannah, Mary, and Ann were under 18. Rebecca and Elizabeth had been previously provided for and were, therefore, probably married. Samuel married Rebecca Odell, daughter of William Odell and Rebecca Brown, about 1662 in Fairfield, Fairfield, CT. (Rebecca Odell was born on Jul 17, 1642 in Concord, Middlesex, MA and died after 1696 in Fairfield, Fairfield, CT.) |
